Love this creative style! Seen on Jungle Barbie.

Did you miss it?!?  If  you did, check out this great Loc Knots Tutorial that Comedian, Singer and Graphic Designer -  Franchesca Ramsey put together. It is the style she wore for her interview on Oprah Radio’s “Gayle King Show".  I am always looking for a way to get some curls. I might have to try this out.....

I received a wonderful email from Loctician Islande.  She sent me a picture of her new hair cut and I love it! If any one is looking for a loc stylist in Canada, you can contact Islande at 1-514-588-6668. Thank you for sharing Islande!

I would like to give a big thanks to Sunshine Abuwi of Natural Sun Shine. She wrote a great article on rocking a TWA (tiny weeny afro), and agreed to letting me share the article on my blog. Read below to see her great variety of style and recommendations.

Newly Natural? Rocking a TWA? Don’t be Afraid of Scissors!
Posted by Sunshine Abuwi on September 19, 2011 at 9:00m

"For many a natural, the TWA (Teeny Weeny Afro) phase can be the hardest one to get through. The short length and lack of style options leaves many running for the closest wig store, regretting their decision to go natural (so soon), or just down in the dumps feeling not as attractive as they once felt.  I wish to encourage those of you who have found yourself in that position to not be afraid of scissors. For many, the reason they feel sobad with their TWA is because it is just a mound of shapeless, styleless hair sitting on top of your head. I don’t care what texture your hair is, if it is just sitting there with no personality or style, it is bound to get you down. I recommend getting the sides and back tapered to create a style. Transform your blah TWA into a cute cut by shaping it. You would be amazed at how much better your TWA would look of your sides and back were a little faded.

Remember, even as you are growing your hair out, you are still alive! You still have places to go and people to see. Today! You can’tjust allow your hair to sit on top of your head shapeless and lifeless while you look forward to that day when you reach a longer length and then are able to style it. Is your life on hold until that day? Didn’t think so! Enjoy each step of the way . Don’t be on some fast paced race to bra strap length. Because even if you stand at the mirror, tapping your foot, pointing at your watch demanding your hair to grow, it is going to take time. Why not enjoy it and your life even while your hair is growing? Getting a little shape up is a great way to do that! When I grew out my hair in 2009, I always either went to a stylist and got my hair shaped or I manipulated it to look like it was in ashape. Have a look!

I recommend going to barber (because it is less expensive than a salon and they are less likely to try to talk you into relaxing) andasking them to give your hair a little shape. Tell them you do not want a line in the front (unless you do) and that you want the sides and back tapered so your hair has more of a style while you are growing it out. I recommend you go on a week day if possible or first thing on a Saturday morning (to avoid all the men). All of you who have used this method while growing your hairplease post pictures or your two cents on this!" - Sunshine Abuwi, Source

I apologize in advance for this slightly PG-13 image... lol.  But her hair is to die for!! I had to share.

See Chris's interview in The Main Source.

I am loving my loc updo right now. It is a fun look that isgreat for the office or for a formal event.

Get this look!   To createthis updo, try the following steps below. If you can, wash your loc'sfirst or spritz them with a setting spray, so that when you take your hairdown (after you hair is completely dry), you will have a nice curlpattern.
1.      Braidyour loc's into sections, using 6 or so loc's per braid. Use a rubber band thatmatches your hair color, to secure the end each braid.  I always washmy hair the night before I do this style, so it gives my hair a chance todry a bit, before creating this updo.
2.      To startthe updo, pull all your braids into a high ponytail.  Ialways do a two section ponytail because my loc’s are long and can be heavyin an updo. With a two part pony tail, you make a ponytail withall your loc braids, except the ones that are on the crown/front edges ofyour head. Once you have created your first ponytail, and have adjusted it so it’scomfortable, add the remaining loose braided loc's to your first ponytail, witha second pony tail holder.
3.      Onceyou created a ponytail, continuously grabbed a one of your loc braids fromthe bottom of the pony tail and reach it around to the top and tuck it in tothe hair band. Because my loc's are long, I don't need to use hair pins. But ifyou are having problems with getting the braids to stay tucked in, use hairpins to secure each braid that you want to tuck in. Make sure to adjustthe hair pin so it is comfortable. After a while, you will not be able to reachthe headband(s), so when you wrap the braid lock around the bun, tuck the end ofthe braid under the closes loc braid, enough to where you feel the braid issecure, and will not fall out.
4.      Onceall the braid loc's have been tucked in, fell around to see if anybraids feel like they are loose or are sticking out; and alsotake time to adjust the bun by moving it around a little bit withboth hands to achieve the bun shape you want. But do not use to muchpressure, or your bun will fall apart. If your loc’s are shorter, you can also puta thin hair net (that matches your hair color) over your loc bun, to make surenone of your braids fall out during the day. To use a hair net - place it overyour bun, and tuck in any loose parts of the net under your bun, and secure itwith a hair pin.
5.      Nowthat you have completed your bun, you can add a decorative headband or fancyhair clip to complete the look.  Enjoy!

Meet Synethia - A women that has a great talent for styling locs. Synethia talked to me about her inspiration and what makes her a Natural Beauty.

Q: What is your hair story?  What kind of hair styles have you rocked, before embracing your natural hair?
A:  I have had many hairstyles from a press to jerri curls to a perm.

Q:  When and why did you decide to start wearing your hair naturally?
A:  I have decided to wear my hair naturally in second year of university. I got really tired of my hair and scalp being battered and scared from perm and damaged from the heat and over processing.

Q:  Did you have any big fears about going back to your natural texture?
A:  Going natural was a great accomplishment for me and I have had more joys than fears. I have had chemical in my hair since I was 10 years old and hardly ever knew what my natural hair looked like. Even though I did not transition to my natural hair in its loose state, I was still overjoyed that I made the step.

Q:  What are three products you can't live without for nurturing/styling your hair?
A:  Lock and twist gel, mango and lime Catcus oil, Dr Bonners Tea Tree Shampoo.

Q:  What would you say to someone who's thinking about embracing their natural hair, but scared about being rejected in various parts of their lives?
A:  I would say if you believe in your natural hair, confident about it then go for it. I have been rejected many times and because I believe that my hair in its natural state is beautiful, I have won over many into realizing that. Most times these people are unaware and need a little education and guidance. Don't crumble just be confident and strong.

Q:  How long have you had a natural hair blog? What has been the most rewarding part of your blogging experience.
A:  Jungle Barbie is 8mths and 11 days old. The most rewarding parts of my blogging experience are dispelling the myth that locks are not stylist, inspiring other locked sisters and brothers and sharing my knowledge whether it be hairstyles and or hair care tips.

Q:  How can we keep up with you and your journey i.e. blog, twitter, facebook, fotki, tumblr, personal or professional website? (Optional)

Q: What is your hair story? What kind of hair styles have you rocked, before embracing your natural hair?
A: I’ve been natural all my life, but before loc’ing I wore two-strand twists, afro puffs, braids, wigs, and occasional press.

Q: When and why did you decide to start wearing your hair naturally?
A: I loc’d my hair Father’s Day weekend 2005. I’ve always admired locs because I knew they were a commitment, especially for someone like me that changed their hairstyle often. One day I decided to make the commitment and loc my hair.

Q: Did you have any big fears about going back to your natural texture?
A: My biggest fear about loc’ing was if I was going to be “stuck” with the same style, however I soon found out that would never happen. Natural hair has a mind of its own, really! Locs are as versatile as you make them; they’re like a style within a style.

Q: What are three products you can't live without for nurturing/styling your hair?
A: The number one thing I cannot live without and no Black woman should be able to live without is a long silk scarf! Seriously, permed, loc’d, natural, weave, whatever, a silk scarf can do wonders! I’m a colorful person, so I cannot live without Clairol Tones & Textures or Kiss Xpress (right now this is what I use, until I find something better). I also need some oil (tea tree, olive, coconut, jojoba, etc.).

Q: What would you say to someone who's thinking about embracing their natural hair, but scared about being rejected in various parts of their lives?
A: Never be afraid to reveal who you are naturally. You are whole and perfect just as you were created.

Franchesca Ramsey create a great video tutorial for a cute braided updo. The style was inspired by Model Sepsenahki.

Gorgeous braided wedding style, show on facebook page NaturallyEJHalo.

Amazing loc styles from loctician Thierry Baptist!

My youngest daughter wanted a curly hair style for her graduation day. So I braided her hair a week earlier. I took her braids out the morning of her graduation, and her hair had a really gorgeous curl pattern. We tried a few things and finally decided on a curly bun. It came out really cute. It was a great day... :-). Congrats to her and all the graduates!

I love it when I see a women with grey/silver hair and it's just beautiful! Teruko looks amazing in her photos, shown on Curly Nikki.
